1/28 Letter #53

Hey Jacob...

It's been a pretty crazy week, busy. Saturday was no exception We had two doctor appointments then, and I have a psychiatric appointment on Wednesday, all at Kaiser Permanente, our new insurance provider. Sarah's appointment was a PT appt, (Physical Therapy) for her ankle, which is doing really well now. They gave us a bunch of foot exercises to do, which were cool. Despite what they tell her, Sarah wants to do a lot of working on her foot so she can run, and perhaps do some half or full marathons in the future. She's going to do her best to get full function of her ankle. I admire her for that.

Our travels home went by without a hitch.

Now Federer's match against Cilic. You won't believe it, but I stayed up to watch the match with started at 12:30am.Today

As you can see, it went to five sets. The first set Federer won easily without any backlash from Cilic. The tie breaker in the second set was barely won by Cilic. It was super close. The rest of the sets run together in my mind, because it was like 1:30am before they were done, and, true to form, I was falling asleep. In fact, I thought the match only went to four sets. It was great to see that Federer, as old as he is, is still kicking butt on the court. It was also fun, waking up Sarah in the middle of the night and telling her of his victory. It also was cool telling mom and dad the news at Stake Conference today. Sarah tried to stay up to watch with me, but she succumbed to the night.

I know you are going to the college tomorrow, if you hadn't already done it. Good luck. You make me so proud to be called your brother. I'm grateful that you've been doing so good with Elder Lin. He seems to be making you a happy missionary. I'm glad things are going well with you two. Snow in Provo was enough of winter that I wanted to see. It made my car so dirty, we had to get a car wash once we got home. I don't envy you at all. In fact, the undercarriage of our car was touching the ground, and on that Sunday we drove around Provo looking for a mechanic that could help us. We were running out of luck, until we bumped into a Hispanic named Hermann outside. He said he would help us out of the kindness of his heart, so he got out the crank and cranked up our car and fixed it in the cold. We thanked him and gave him some cash for his troubles. But it was definitely a blessing to be helped by him. No coincidences. Angels from above.

Sarah and I just got back from the Stake Center in Rancho a few minutes ago. We decided that we are going to participate in the second wave of self reliance courses. Fortunately, this time around, I don't have to be a facilitator (not that doing so was hard). I am going to participate in the Education for Better Work class, and Sarah is going to do the class for Starting Her Own Business. At first she was going to join me, but she felt prompted to do this work. My class is from 3-5pm on Sundays and hers is from 5-7pm on Sunday, starting next week. At first I was reluctant to commit to another 12 weeks, like getting up early in the morning. But Sarah persuaded me to do it again.

Life at work has been relatively hard this last week. I was asked to teach fifth grade twice, once as a courtesy and the second time because I was roving...both times I almost strangled some of the kids I was teaching. Fortunately, the first day was a minimum day, so I was ready to see them off when the time came. The other instance, I could rely on a teacher for a little bit of help, and also, I was asked to teach a different class after the 5th grade teacher was done doing dibels. It was just at the right time, because one of the boys tripped up on closed hard instrument cases. He was complaining of lost of feeling in his back and legs. That's how crazy kids are that I have to deal with sometimes.

Other classes were better, but by friday, the kids and I were just done.

We had Sarah's mom stay here with us Saturday night and Sunday through the afternoon. We picked up a whole chicken from Kikyriki, plus some fries and some salad. Although, Sarah noticed that the salad is not worth the price. It was good. We ate at the table. Then we went to Walmart, picked up stuff, including a three-shelf bookshelf. It was my project to put it together. It was confusing at first, but after careful inspection, I was able to put it all together, using Sarah and her mom when I needed them the most. I watched the basketball game at the same time. We also did some laundry.

We went to a Stake Conference. The biggest take away was that it is not where you serve, but how you serve. D. Todd Christofferson presided at the meeting. President Stacey talked about Self Reliance. I was wondering if they were going to announce classes, but they didn't. I don't know when Fontana is going to adopt the classes. The talk is what reminded us about going to the Rancho kickoff. We also took away that it is good to give back to the Lord what is rightfully his, and he will bless us.

Life is good. I hope you are well. Thanks for the line you sent last week...it's always good to hear from you. I was grateful for your praise of me and how I hide my anxiety...I think I'm learning everyday how to deal with it. It doesn't come all at once. Sarah and I are going to the gym at least three times a week. We also go to the temple on Wednesday. We're not going this week because our bishop asked us to come to church that night. We expect new callings from our meeting with him. We are wondering if it's the same calling, like nursery, or separate ones. Whatever they are, we are willing to serve.

As we know you are.

Love you bud.

John
