8/14 First day woes and 5 days of work

First sub day back! Man was it a day. Let's just say I was happy to finish the day and relax. I was at McKinley Elementary in Colton today, first grade, Mrs. Tavenner's class. I hope I taught to her liking, it definitely wasn't easy. I was pumped this morning, giving my class high fives and saying good morning and ready to teach but then as the day progressed, the kids just wore on me. The principal came in mid-day, 20 minutes before lunch and told me that I needed to pick up the pace because I was teaching too slowly. She didn't know that she went over on time before lunch and when she left, she came back in and hurried us off to lunch, like it was my fault. There was also a Lock Down Drill today. Fortunately, the teacher was nice enough to let me know that there would be one, so during the opening exercises, I prepped the kids for it. They were actually pretty good when it happened. I just had to tell them that they needed to whisper. One girl that was all over the place during the drill and throughout the rest of the day was Madison, a little black girl. At the end of the day I found her under her desk (among other places) and she was crying. I don't know what happened to cause the outburst. But as I tried to console her she said that she wanted to see her dad. It was almost the end of the day so I told her she would see him soon. Then she said that her dad had passed away. Oops. What could I say to that but sorry. She was the last of all the students to leave. The morning PE was hopscotch with a bean bag. I noticed a boy named Caleb that was really slow so I let him sit on the benches. He wasn't just slow at that but he was also slow in other things as well. When the kids were being picked up, his mom came up to me to ask how he did. I didn't want to tell her that her kid was slow, so I told her that he needed a lot of help. She was like Yeah, he says he's afraid of his teacher. I was like, now you mention it, he was a bit scared of me. Honestly, he should probably be in special ed. Also, at the end of the day, one kid forgot his backpack and homework. Awww, man. So, that was a little picture of how my school day was.

I got jobs, both roving for tomorrow at Grimes, and Wednesday at Jurupa Vista. So, I am booked the whole week, which, most of the times is rare, but I did it.

I went to Food 4 Less with Mom to pick up gift cards and Target to pick up birthday cards for Jacob and Sarah. I got $20 to give to both the kids.

FHE was funny. I got paired up with Tyler Frederick and we were the first to lose ultimate spoons. I didn't expect too much when I knew that Tyler was paired up with me. So I spent the rest of the time talking to others like the Elders and the Kirtleys.
